Claude Pro vs the API:
which is cheaper?

A flat subscription or pay-per-token? How to compare Claude plans with the API for chat, Claude Code and apps, and the break-even to work out.

Prepaid, no subscriptionREST or MCPOne key for models, data and agents

Anthropic sells Claude two ways. A subscription gives you the Claude apps and Claude Code for a flat monthly fee, within usage limits. The API gives you the models by the token, with no fee and no limit other than your balance. Neither is cheaper in general: which one costs less depends on how much you use it and what for. This page gives you a way to find your own break-even in ten minutes, without guessing.

Plan prices and limits change, so this guide doesn't quote them. Take the current monthly fee and the limits from Anthropic's plan page and plug them in below.

What each one is for

SubscriptionAPI
You payA fixed fee per monthPer token used
Good forChatting in the app, daily use by one personApps, scripts, agents, teams, bursty use
When you use it a lotThrottled by usage limitsKeeps going, cost grows
When you barely use itYou still pay the feeYou pay almost nothing

The API is also the only way to put Claude inside something you build, or to share one budget across a team with a spend cap on each key.

02

Work out your break-even

  1. Estimate your tokens. For a week of normal use, find tokens per task. For chat that's a few thousand per message including the history; for a coding agent, use the numbers from How much Claude Code costs.
  2. Price them on the model you actually use, with the calculator.
  3. Scale to a month and compare to the plan fee.

If the API number is below the fee, the API wins. If it's above, the subscription is worth it, until you hit its limits.

03

Rules of thumb

A few chats a day

the API is almost always cheaper. A conversation is a few thousand tokens, which costs cents on a mid-sized model.

Occasional coding help

the API again, particularly with prompt caching on.

A full day of agent work, every day

this is where a flat plan can win, because an agent's token use is large. Run the numbers on one real day first.

Anything you ship to other people, or run unattended

the API, because a subscription is for one person using the app.

04

You can have both

{}

They don't exclude each other. Many people keep a subscription for chat and use an API key for Claude Code, scripts and projects, so the two budgets stay separate and a runaway agent can't eat the chat allowance. Claude Code takes either one: log in with the plan, or set ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN to use a key, as in the Claude Code setup.

On Half Off Dev the API side is half of Anthropic's list price for every Claude model, which moves the break-even toward the API. You pay with a prepaid balance, so there's no recurring charge and nothing to cancel: create an account and try a day of real work on a small top-up.

Frequently asked questions

?
Is the Claude API cheaper than Claude Pro?+

For light or irregular use, yes. For heavy daily agent use, a flat plan can be cheaper until you hit its limits. Compute your own monthly token use and compare it with the plan fee, as above.

Does Claude Pro include API access?+

No. A Claude subscription and API credit are separate products with separate billing. An API key needs API credit.

Can I use Claude Code with the API instead of Pro?+

Yes. Export ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL and ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and Claude Code bills your prepaid balance per token instead of drawing on a plan's limits.

What happens when I run out of API credit?+

Requests return 402 until you top up. Nothing renews by itself, so a forgotten key can't produce a surprise charge. See Billing.

How do I stop an API key from spending too much?+

Give each key a spend cap in API keys, and watch usage in Logs.

One prepaid key for models, data and agents

No subscription. Top up, use what you need, see every charge in your logs.
